A dental implant used to replace a missing tooth is a simple process. The procedure involves placing the implant into the bone at the site of the missing tooth. It will integrate and become the anchor attachment for a fixed (permanent) restoration. The healing process takes about 12 weeks but in some situations a tooth can be placed on the implant immediately. The final tooth restoration will be permanent and custom made at a dental lab to match the mouth.

Implant terminology can be confusing! Let’s break it down
Dental implants consist of three parts

Implant: titanium or zirconia screw placed into bone. Replaces the root of a missing tooth or teeth.

Abutment: Custom-made at a dental lab. A piece that connects the dental implant to the crown. The abutment base is screwed and torqued into the implant below the gum. The top portion sticks out through the gum tissue into the mouth.

Implant Crown: The new tooth replacement! Custom-made at the lab to fit perfectly over the abutment. It will be cemented (either in the mouth or at the lab) to the abutment. The crown is made of zirconia or porcelain and will match the other teeth.
